Ideas for healthy packed lunches

This year we are focusing on healthy eating and, as part of this, thinking about the packed lunches children bring in to Pre-School. In September, we held an event where parents could join us for a healthy lunch prepared by the children. This helped the children show off what they had learned and was judged as very tasty by parents. See our photo below!

To provide some inspiration, below we have collated a list of options for food you could include in a healthy packed lunch box. We would love to hear your suggestions of other items that we could add to this page. If you have any ideas, please email them to Flying.Start@Peasmarsh.e-sussex.sch.uk or talk to a member of staff.

  • Sandwich
  • Tuna and pasta salad (canned tuna, chopped peppers with a little olive oil and lemon juice)
  • Pasta salad with pesto
  • Lentil curry (or dhal) with chapatti
  • Cherry tomatoes (halved for under fives)
  • Mini pitta bread with hummus and grated carrots
  • Bread roll with canned salmon and cucumber slices
  • Breadsticks with hummus
  • Carrot, celery or cucumber sticks
  • Sticks of red and yellow pepper

  • Cubes of cheese
  • Hard boiled egg
  • Sweetcorn
  • Fruit fromage frais or yoghurt
  • Banana
  • Handful of strawberries*
  • Cubes of melon
  • Peach or nectarine
  • Handful of raisins*
  • Handful of grapes*
  • Slice of banana bread

*Handful means child-sized hand not adult.

Lunches should not include fizzy drinks, crisps and chocolate. We also ask that they be packed in suitable containers (e.g. not glass). We have a fridge available for you to put your children’s lunch box to keep food cool.

We always have milk and water available for the children at lunchtime. Each child also has their own water bottle which they have access to at all times.
